Current Events in Cranston

The recent court case resulting in the required removal of a prayer banner hanging inside Cranston West High School is a recent example of current events that can be discussed in schools.
This issue gives teachers and students the opportunity to discuss the separation of church and state in our country and how it effects all citizens.
We, as educators, need to take the opportunity to discuss with students issues that are important in our collective lives as informed citizens.

Teaching children about current events!

While it is important that children receive unbiased information on current events, we must be aware of how totally unfiltered information can be disturbing to a child. The Penn State scandal is a current event story that must be discussed in a more gentle and age appropriate manner.
The current issue of redistricting our representative districts is, in my opinion,. a wonderful discussion point for students in a social studies setting.
